Greater Manchester Challenge sails with a professional skipper and 1st mate, as well as two watch leaders and a bosun who are usually volunteers.
Volunteer sea staff are essential to the running of the boat and OYT-NW is committed to providing training and support to sea staff. This area of the web site is for sea staff-related items such as news and training information. If there is anything you would like us to include here, please let us know.

HHello, I'm Dave Murray. Please find below some of the members of sea staff. We will be adding the rest of them shortly.

Hopefully later this year, James will be taking the position as Skipper. As I'm sure many of you know, he has been an extremely good and capable First Mate, and we are looking forward to him becoming the

Skipper of GMC.

Whilst we are waiting for James to become the Skipper, we needed a photograph, so we thought it best to put mine in, as I'm the best looking !

Volunteer Sea Staff are essential to the operating of most, if not all, sail training organisations. OYTNW is always on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers, irrespective of their previous sailing experience. Our only criteria are an enhanced CRB Clearance and a desire to sail and assist young people to develop their skills and potential.

In addition the Skipper and First Mate, who are fully qualified professional sailors, on most voyages there will be 2 adult volunteer Watch Leaders and a volunteer Bosun. The Bosun position is generally reserved for OYTNW members who are training to be Watch Leaders.

If you are interested in joining the sea staff and have an enthusiasm for youth work and sailing, please contact the OYT-NW office.

Criminal Records Bureau clearance
All sea-staff (and all other adults involved with the organisation) must hold a current enhanced Criminal Records Bureau clearance before sailing with us. The procedure is straightforward, but may take several weeks. Please start the process in plenty of time. Instructions for obtaining CRB clearance
Before sailing in any of these positions, seastaff must be assessed by OYT-NW. Check here for details of seastaff requirements and minimum and maximum ages for various positions.

Sea Staff Joining instructions

If possible, relief professional skippers and 1st mates should try join the boat the evening before the crew are due to join. It is expected that they will remain aboard after the crew has departed to facilitate the handover.

  • Volunteer seastaff must arrive at the vessel at least 2 hours before the departure detailed in the public programme. If possible, it is desirable to join the vessel the evening before your voyage starts to help with safety checks and pre-voyage planning. It is also a good idea to allow a couple of hours at the end of voyage for debriefing.

  • 24 hours before joining, confirm there is no change to the departure port. If delayed, seastaff should contact either the office on 07901 914499, or GMC directly. The mobile number for GMC is 07967 589 116.
